Major Gifts Development Director - Arizona & Southwest - Hybrid (Finance)



Description

Help advance Vitalant's life-saving mission as a Major Gifts Development Director. In this front-line fundraising role, you'll serve as a key ambassador for our Foundation-building lasting relationships with donors to inspire generous support for our work. By identifying, engaging, and stewarding individuals committed to making a difference, you'll help ensure a strong financial foundation that allows us to continue saving lives through blood and biotherapies. This position is responsible for achieving annual revenue and portfolio management goals while cultivating deep, mission-driven donor connections.

This position will have a hybrid work environment operating from the Scottsdale, AZ location 3 days per week and working from a remote/ at-home office 2 days per week.

As a Major Gifts Development Director, you'll get to:
  • Identify, qualify, and engage major gift prospects through strategic outreach, research, and discovery visits.
  • Build and manage a portfolio of 100-125 donors with the capacity to give $10,000 or more annually.
  • Develop and implement personalized cultivation and solicitation strategies that align donor interests with Vitalant's mission.
  • Collaborate with leadership, clinicians, and communications staff to translate complex initiatives into compelling proposals.
  • Design tailored stewardship plans and ensure timely recognition, impact reporting, and donor satisfaction.
  • Coordinate meaningful donor experiences, including site visits, events, and one-on-one engagement opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate records in the donor database and regularly report on fundraising goals and portfolio activity.

Requirements

Knowledge/ Education

  • Bachelor's degree required in communications, marketing, sales, business, or related field, required.
  • Master's degree, preferred.
  • Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE), preferred.
Experience
  • 5 years of experience in major gifts fundraising, required. To Include:
    • Demonstrated success with proven results in securing gifts of over $10,000.
    • Experience in a healthcare, medical, research or academic institution.
    • Experience successfully qualifying donors via phone outreach and in-person meetings.
  • Demonstrated success with proven results in securing gifts of over $25,000, preferred
Skills/ Abilities
  • Must possess the skills and abilities to successfully perform all assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to synthesize scientific concepts for donor audiences.
  • Proficiency in donor databases (preferably Virtuous) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strategic thinker with strong relationship-building and negotiation abilities.
  • Comfortable engaging with scientists, high-net-worth individuals, and philanthropic leaders.
  • High degree of initiative, professionalism, and discretion.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and detail oriented.
  • Local and regional travel with occasional national and overnight for donor engagement.
  • Occasional evenings and weekends.
