Driver (Maintenance)



Position summary

The Resident Transportation Specialist is responsible for providing safe, reliable, and comfortable transportation services for residents of the facility to and from medical appointments, outings, and other approved activities. This role emphasizes resident safety, well-being, and positive representation of the facility within the community.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Resident Transportation:
    • Safely transports residents to and from scheduled appointments and activities, including loading and unloading from facility-approved vehicles
    • Ensures the safe ingress, egress, and securement of mobile and wheelchair-bound residents in facility vehicles.
    • Provides assistance to residents with transfers, lifting, and mobilization, and other activities of daily living as needed, particularly when assisting with vehicle entry and exit.
  • Vehicle Management:
    • Maintains the cleanliness and overall condition of the interior and exterior of facility vehicles.
    • Monitors and maintains accurate vehicle logs, including inspection reports and maintenance schedules.
    • Coordinates and schedules vehicle maintenance, including routine servicing like oil changes and tire rotations.
    • Inspects facility vehicles daily to ensure safe operating condition.
  • Resident Care & Observation:
    • Observes resident mood and behavior during transportation and reports any changes or concerns to appropriate staff, such as the Activities Director or resident's nurse.
    • Exercises sound judgment in complex situations involving the highly dependent resident base.
  • Communication & Collaboration:
    • Coordinates transportation needs and requests with other departments in a courteous and timely manner.
    • Communicates effectively with residents, their families, and facility staff regarding transportation arrangements and resident well-being.
  • Compliance & Safety:
    • Adheres to all traffic regulations and facility safety policies and procedures.
    • Maintains a clean driving record and complies with all state and federal regulations related to transportation services.
    • Establishes and maintains a culture of compliance with all facility policies and procedures, standards of business conduct, and state/federal regulations.
    • Follows established infection control procedures and universal precautions.
    • Participates in emergency drills and trainings, fulfilling assigned responsibilities during emergency situations.
    • Reports work-related injuries and illnesses, non-compliance with policies or regulations, and allegations of abuse, neglect, or exploitation in accordance with facility policy.

Qualifications

  • Education and/or Experience:
    • Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED.
    • Prior experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), preferably in long-term care.
    • Minimum of 6 months experience as a bus/van driver
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
    • Valid Driver's License.
    • Current CNA Certification and maintaining required continuing education.
    • Class B license with passenger endorsement or willingness to obtain a CDL (Commercial Driver's License).
    • Current CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • Driving Record:
    • Minimum age of 25 years old.
    • No Traffic Crimes in the last 7 years, including DUI, DWS, Reckless Driving, Traffic Felonies, Multiple DUI, DWS, Leaving Scene with Injuries, or Assault with a Vehicle.
    • Not more than 2 moving violations in 3 years.
    • Not more than one accident in 3 years.
    • Maintain a clean driving record, without substantial violation(s), throughout the term of employment.
  • Knowledge and Skills:
    • Familiarity with GPS and local driving area.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products.
    • Ability to read, write, and understand job-related instructions and manuals.
    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, coworkers, and residents.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service experience.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.
    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
    • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
    • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
    • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
    • Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations.
  • Other:
    • Pass a drug screen and background check.

Physical demands

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, read or hear.
  • Must be able to bend, crouch, and squat, and able to push wheelchairs without restriction.
  • Requires sufficient fine motor skills to operate hospital equipment such as various types of patient beds, wheelchairs and discharge sled.
  • May be exposed to unpleasant odors, chemicals, and potentially infectious materials.

Work environment

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
  • May be required to work outdoors when escorting passengers or performing vehicle maintenance.
  • May encounter hostile or emotional residents, family members, visitors, or personnel.
