Position Summary:
Experienced and highly skilled sonographer who performs advanced, high-resolution Maternal-Fetal ultrasounds for the detection of fetal anomalies and the prevention of adverse outcomes related to fetal and maternal complications. In addition to clinical expertise, the Lead MFM Sonographer supports daily workflow coordination, mentors staff and serves as a liaison between the sonography team and MFM leadership to ensure quality, consistency, and operational excellence.
Position Key Accountabilities:
    Essential Functions
  • Performs advanced, high-resolution obstetrical ultrasounds on high-risk patients, including both singleton and multiple gestations: Comprehensive Anatomical Surveys, Fetal Pulsed and Color Doppler Studies to assess suspected fetal anomalies, fetal growth restriction, placental complications, and complications related to multiples. Executes specialized imaging such as Biophysical Profile Testing, Fetal Growth Surveys, Nuchal Translucency, First Trimester Screens/Scans, and Transvaginal Ultrasounds to evaluate cervical and placental complications. Ensures adherence to imaging protocols, supports quality assurance efforts, and provides guidance to team members on complex cases and evolving clinical standards.
  • Utilizes a variety of ultrasound imaging techniques (Transabdominal, Transvaginal, 3D/4D, Doppler) to evaluate fetal and uterine physiology. Ensures adherence to imaging protocols, mentors team members on technique optimization, and supports quality assurance across all imaging procedures.
  • Provides expert ultrasound guidance for in-office procedures such as amniocentesis. Supports care for high-risk patients, including those with increased risk for fetal anomalies, congenital abnormalities, fetal growth restriction, stillbirth, premature birth, or other adverse pregnancy outcomes. Mentors team members in procedural support techniques and reinforces adherence to clinical protocols.
  • Independently obtains a detailed patient history to assess for maternal conditions and prior outcomes that may impact the current pregnancy and the need for further ultrasound exams. Supports team members in clinical decision-making and ensures thorough, consistent patient assessments across the sonography team.
  • Independently communicates ultrasound findings and provides a written report to the attending MFM Physician to aid in the diagnostic process. Ensures consistency and accuracy in diagnostic processes across the team and provides guidance on complex or atypical cases. Participates in data collection for research studies for the OBGYN and MFM Departments.
  • Provides foundational OBGYN ultrasound instruction to recently hired sonographers, MFM Fellows, sonographer students, medical students, OB residents, NPs, Physician Assistants, and Certified Nurse Midwives. Provides clinical oversight and mentorship to ensure consistency in training and adherence to best practices.
  • Performs and oversees pelvic ultrasounds for gynecological patients, providing guidance to team members and ensuring adherence to imaging standards.
  • Performs Fetal Echocardiogram Screening on high-risk patients to screen for the presence of complex heart defects and rhythm anomalies that will be referred to Pediatric Cardiology for confirmation and treatment. Provides guidance to team members on fetal cardiac imaging protocols/processes and supports quality assurance in echocardiographic evaluations.
  • Operates and maintains specialized Ultrasound and Trophon equipment. Maintains sterilization equipment logs. Maintains a clean workspace and properly cleans/sterilizes equipment between each use. Performs basic maintenance on equipment to assure proper working conditions. Provides high level oversight when managing inventory and assists with timely, accurate supply ordering.
  • Assists in equipment management, including upgrades, and implementation of new system applications. Supports with system troubleshooting for image archive and database systems. Assists with ensuring equipment and systems are kept up-to-date and compliant with current standards. Assists with the set-up and opening of new clinical sites. Assists manager with resource allocation across all clinic sites to ensure adequate staffing, including scheduling sonographers and managing coverage for both planned and unplanned absences. Supports hiring efforts, facilitates training, and provides day-to-day oversight of sonographers. Contributes to the development of unit protocols and ensures their consistent implementation across all clinical sites.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Demonstrates advanced skills and leadership competencies necessary to safely and effectively perform and guide others in the delivery of high-quality maternal-fetal ultrasound services.

  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) by American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) required
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) by American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) required
  • Fetal Echocardiography (FE) by American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) required

Minimum Education:
Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) AMA approved school of Diagnostic Medical Sonography accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) required Associate's Degree required
Minimum Experience:
4 years experience in diagnostic ultrasound required 4 years experience in OBGYN or Maternal Fetal Medicine required
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
