Role Summary:

The SVP, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Legal is accountable to the General Counsel for overseeing the financial, operational, internal communications and administrative functions of the Legal Department. The CAO function is responsible for leadership and oversight of the business strategy and managing resource and infrastructure needs, including management of the Global Contract Services function in Poland and the technology that supports contract generation, maintenance and search capabilities for all contracts at State Street Corporation (SSC). The CAO is expected to interact with other functions including Operations, Risk, Audit and prudential regulators, as required.

The CAO position is responsible for developing agendas for weekly Legal Department staff meetings and for providing and presenting regular reporting to the Legal Department executive team as well as developing content and overseeing preparation for other required committee meetings and quarterly SSC Executive Committee business reviews.

The CAO drives and maintains collaborative relationships with company executives, peers, and internal stakeholders and has direct responsibility for overseeing a global team of more than 50 professionals.

As a direct report to the General Counsel, the SVP, CAO Legal is member of the Legal leadership team that plays a key role in the development and implementation of the Legal strategy and drives department operations including resource planning, management reporting, and manages all aspects of the financial budget process for the function.

Other Key Responsibilities include:

  • Translating the Legal function's strategic goals into actionable operational plans and ensuring their effective execution.
  • Monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs), identifying areas for improvement, and implementing strategies to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Managing the team responsible for providing centralized contract services and related operational support across the globe
  • Leading and motivating employees, fostering a positive work environment, and ensuring effective communication and collaboration across the Legal Department.
  • Continuously evaluating and improving operational processes to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve quality.
  • Working with the finance team to develop and manage the company's operational budget.
  • Identifying and mitigating potential operational risks and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards as well as improving control measures.
  • Collaborating across functions and with Human Resources to develop, implement and oversee an effective division-wide Legal Talent Management program
  • Representing the Legal Department in cross-functional projects and committees providing value-added insights and establishing and sustaining collaborative business partnerships
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with vendors including 3rd party legal firms.

Qualifications and Skills include:
  • A minimum of 15 years of related operations management experience
  • A minimum of 15 years of executive leadership experience in a legal function of a large, global financial services firm
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in leading global teams and board facing responsibilities preferred
  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills at both the executive and board level
  • Expert knowledge of current trends and technical issues impacting a professional legal function
  • Strong managerial and cross-functional leadership skills
  • Expertise in project management and change management; strong execution skills
  • Proven experience in leading transformational change, driving continuous improvement and demonstrating process excellence
  • Strong executive presence and influencing skills
  • Solid grasp of data analysis and performance metrics
  • Highly organized with extensive analytical, problem-solving and negotiation skills
  • Master's level degree (preferred)

Salary Range:
$225,000 - $337,500 Annual

The range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location above, the applicable range could differ.
