Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Assistant Dean of Marketing and Communications, the Marketing Manager serves as a strategic leader and collaborative partner between the school's communications team and individual departments. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and measuring marketing strategies that enhance visibility among prospective students, elevate the school's reputation, and position academic departments and programs for growth in recognition and influence.

The Marketing Manager meets regularly with assigned departments to discuss marketing objectives, define key messaging and differentiators, develop creative strategies, manage deadlines and budgets, and ensure alignment with broader institutional goals. The successful candidate will bring a strong command of brand storytelling, messaging, and measurable marketing practices.

Workplace Requirements:

Hybrid position: This is a remote work position (resides in Houston) with occasional requirements to be in-person on campus. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.

Hiring Range: $85,000 - 90,000

*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree
    • In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
  • 3+ years experience in communications, marketing, or public relations
    • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted

Skills:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong organizational and creative problem-solving abilities Ability to prioritize, take initiative, and own projects
  • Ability to take direction and work to meet expected deadlines and schedules
  • Familiarity with content management systems

Preferences:
  • Demonstrated experience in communicating complex scientific concepts to a general audience
  • Proven success developing and executing integrated marketing strategies and campaigns
  • Track record of setting and achieving KPIs across digital channels
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and shifting priorities
  • Knowledge of trends in marketing and communications, especially in higher education and STEM fields

Essential Functions:
  • Responsible for overseeing strategic long-range plans/programs to meet organizational objectives for a school or department
  • Defines and / or leverages the communication and brand strategy for the organization incorporating appropriate channels
  • Sets and monitors budgets for broad-based projects impacting many areas
  • Selects and oversees the department vendor relationships
  • Possess working knowledge of social media management and systems
  • Writes and coordinates the production of marketing and communication materials
  • Leads market research and analysis efforts
  • Guides organization to use the results in strategic marketing direction, program segmentation and audience targeting
  • Participates in university-wide and / or organization-wide initiatives and cross-functional teams to establish the organization as a strategic partner and thought leader
  • Provide guidance to others
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
