Peer Support Specialist I (439) (Personal Services)

The Peer Support Specialist I will play a vital role in the wellness center by providing support, guidance, and encouragement to individuals experiencing mental health challenges. This position requires a strong understanding of mental health recovery, lived experience, and the ability to foster a supportive and inclusive environment. The specialist will work collaboratively with clients, staff, and community resources to promote recovery and wellness.

How will I contribute

Provide one-on-one and group peer support to clients, utilizing personal experience to foster trust and rapport.Facilitate peer support groups and workshops focused on coping strategies, recovery, and wellness.Initiate and maintain a variety of clear progress notes, service records, and other required documentation in the SmartCare HER system, in a timely manner.Assist clients in developing and implementing individualized recovery plans, including setting goals and identifying resources.Support clients in their transitions between levels of care.Assist clients in adhering to treatment plans by providing support in all areas.Share knowledge and personal experiences to help clients navigate their recovery journey.Monitor client progress and communicate with treatment team. Collaborate with mental health professionals and community resources to coordinate care and support services.Coordinate linkages to the Managed Care Plans (MCP) for clients continued Mental Health Services.Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards while documenting client interactions and progress.Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and ongoing professional development.Advocate for clients needs and rights within the wellness center and the broader community.Promote a culture of inclusivity, empathy, and respect among clients and staff.Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall functioning and success of the program.

What I bring

A High School Diploma (or Equivalent)Class C Driving LicenseMust be engaged in personal wellness and recovery if a consumer. Basic understanding and appreciation of wellness and recovery principles. Interest in obtaining the knowledge of the philosophy and goals of program assigned, common practices and procedures in wellness and recovery interaction with clients.Must be a current or past consumer of mental health services or a family member of a consumer if program requires. Advanced skills in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and comprehensive knowledge of resources and services.Demonstrated ability to independently manage client interactions, respond to a wider range of needs, and take on more complex cases with less oversight. Must possess strong communication and active listening skills to effectively engage with clients. They must demonstrate empathy and a nonjudgmental approach, ensuring a supportive environment for individuals seeking assistance. Additionally, the ability to multitask and manage time efficiently is essential, as is the capacity to handle stress-related situations with composure. Problem-solving skills and a commitment to recovery values will further enhance effectiveness in this role.Demonstrated interest in the care of individuals with mental illness. Ability to communicate well with consumers. Must exhibit compassion, patience, and resilience, fostering a supportive atmosphere for clients. Open-minded and culturally sensitive, understanding the diverse backgrounds and experiences of those seeking support. Strong interpersonal skills are essential to build rapport and trust with clients. Additionally, a proactive attitude and willingness to learn and grow within the role are important characteristics for success as a Peer Support Specialist.Certification in first aid/CPR and crisis intervention. Familiarity with local mental health resources and community organizations. Bilingual skills are a plus.
