Job Description
Primary Function of Position
The Director of Advanced Process Technology leads and develops a growing team dedicated to researching cutting edge manufacturing, process technology and standards to develop a manufacturing technology implementation roadmap, including process, equipment and development standards and techniques. This individual brings deep manufacturing, operations and whole-lifecycle technical expertise along with proven leadership in people management and development, cross-functional collaboration, and resource stewardship.

This role is pivotal in supporting Intuitive's path to industrial scale manufacturing on a global level. It involves building a high-performing team of engineers and setting the standard for development, construction and implementation of future manufacturing processes -all in service of delivering safe, effective, and innovative medical platforms and novel technologies to our patients.

Essential Job Duties

Team Leadership and Development

  • Build , direct, lead, mentor, a new team of approximately 25 process and manufacturing engineers and managers, focusing on both individual development and organizational capability.
  • Foster a high-performance, values-driven culture focused on accountability, transparency, and innovation.
  • Anticipate organizational capability needs and proactively recruit or develop team members to meet existing and evolving business demands.

Strategic Manufacturing Leadership
  • Serve as the primary manufacturing engineering leader and director for early-stage technology implementation strategy.
  • Establish and oversee creation of a comprehensive framework of standards to ensure Intuitive's manufacturing facilities maintain commonality across the globe, particularly as we scale.
  • Develop a manufacturing equipment supply chain with aligned capabilities to our needs and governance ensuring project success and Intuitive IP protection
  • Drive alignment between design engineering, process engineering, commercial, finance and other functions through effective communication and clear prioritization frameworks.

Stakeholder Collaboration
  • Serve as a key process engineering voice in early-stage programs, influencing cross-functional peers and senior leaders.
  • Engage with industry groups, associations, university networks and more to maintain maximum visibility to emerging trends and technologies in manufacturing and operations management.
  • Conduct quarterly manufacturing technology road map reviews company wide.

Project Planning and Resource Management
  • Develop and manage integrated program plans, Gantt timelines, resource loading, and cross-functional dependencies.
  • Optimize allocation of engineering resources, supplier collaboration and capital resources across multiple projects.
  • Own advanced process technologies' budget forecasting and ensure disciplined use of company resources aligned with portfolio objectives.
  • Ensure all initiatives and objectives are progressing according to plan, managing risks, resolving blockers, and adjusting resources as needed.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum 12+ years of hands-on experience in manufacturing or operations engineering management, preferably with at least 5 years in medical device manufacturing overseeing cross-functional teams through all phases of product development and implementation.
  • Proven track record of leading complex, multi-site product manufacturing projects from introduction through sustaining production.
  • Demonstrated expertise in manufacturing process control and throughput optimization, using statistical and other methods.
  • Strong technical knowledge in areas of assembly manufacturing including robotics, automation, Manufacturing Execution Systems, Supervisory Control and Data Analysis.
  • Confident technical knowledge of essential manufacturing methods such as metal stamping, metal injection molding, plastics injection molding, ultrasonic welding, laser welding, threaded fastener joint design and more.
  • Deep familiarity with design and production control processes in the medical device industry.
  • Skilled in project planning and execution using tools such as Microsoft Project, Smartsheet, or equivalent; demonstrated ability to model resource requirements, develop multi-phase program timelines, and manage cross-functional interdependencies.
  • Experience working in high volume production environments, including optimization of existing processes for increased efficiency.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of clearly articulating complex clinical and technical information across stakeholders including regulatory, engineering, and commercial leadership.
  • Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop high-performance teams; demonstrated success recruiting and retaining top engineering talent

Required Education and Training:
  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD preferred) in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or a related technical discipline with direct application to medical device development and production.

Working Conditions:
  • Must be available to work full-time in Sunnyvale, CA
  • Up to 25% travel. Some international travel may be required.

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience duplicating production facilities to new sites; line transfers
  • Medical device process qualification: DQ/IQ/OQ/PQ
  • Familiarity with engineering change control systems, Agile
  • SAP production and process control systems familiarity
  • Creation, use and governance of manufacturing equipment design and construction standards
  • Development of global manufacturing equipment suppliers and supply chains.

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The target salary ranges are listed.

Base Salary Range Region 1: $211,600 USD - $317,400 USD
Base Salary Range Region 2: $179,800 USD - $269,800 USD
