Industrial Design Co-op (Finance)



JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Director of Onsite Servicesthe Industrial Design Co-Op develops creative and applicable design solutions primarily for our healthcare and medical device clients, as well as non-medical consumer and industrial clients.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Overview
Provide a 360-degree ID view of primarily healthcare & medical projects, as well as non-medical projects. Including: User needs advocate (surgeon, patient, nurse, consumer), human factor expertise / methodologies for usability testing (with R&I team), regulatory requirements, manufacturing, and brand assets / aesthetics, all culminating into a comprehensive functional and manufacturable solution.
Design Solutions (50%)

  • Based on user-centered design principles create functional and manufacturable design solutions based on documented design specifications and criteria
  • Discern critical design factors important to assigned projects and to be able to logically defend tradeoffs (ergonomics, manufacturability, aesthetics, etc.)
  • Identify the most technically challenging problems and create strategic & tactical solutions including root cause identification, individual researched solutions, concept generation, creating a plan forward, and tracking execution progress
  • Work collaboratively and seeks out other disciplines to optimize design solutions while being seen as ID advocate / voice for Industrial Design in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Effectively and efficiently develop design deliverables appropriate to need; 2D Digital Sketching, simple low-fidelity prototypes, advanced 3D printed prototypes, to engineering ready SolidWorks CAD

Project Research (20%)

  • Partner with the Research & Insights team as needed to:
    • Research and brainstorm activities
    • Objectively observe and understand user research inputs
    • Participate in observational research to uncover unmet needs
    • Participate in usability tests in order to discover design requirements and validate design concepts

Client Interaction and Design Presentation (20%)

  • Clearly articulate design approach and rationale behind proposed design solutions
  • With design project lead, participates in the presentation of designs concepts and prototypes to internal and client stakeholders for review
  • Serve as ambassador for the company representing and promoting capabilities, offerings

Continuous Improvement/Specialization (10%)

  • Areas of expertise beyond senior designer, such as usability, medical device, design controls, design thinking, etc.
  • Remain current with technologies, trends, brands, competitors, etc.
  • Stays abreast of best in class work and implements new processes and techniques

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design or related field, required
  • 3+ years of professional experience in innovation/product development in a medical device setting, required
  • Working knowledge of FDA content necessary for medical device pre-market submission (IEC 60601 standards), including an understanding of how to apply the principles within the ISO 14971 risk management for medical devices is a plus.
  • Demonstrated expertise in user-centered design and the principles of design for manufacturing

Skills/Specialized Knowledge/Abilities

  • Working knowledge of 2D and 3D digital tools, including Solidworks 3D modeling program to ensure design intent integration and a smooth hand-off to/from the technical engineering group
  • Consistent ability to provide and inspire in other team members fresh, clever and unexpected solutions (think out of the box), Surprise and Delight
  • Strong aesthetic sensitivity with a discernment of good/bad visual design (2D and 3D sculptural forms)
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate design intent by a variety of means: ideas in 2D and 3D form appropriately to a specific purpose, at a high level of professionalism
  • Deep production design experience: understanding of materials, processes and assembly
  • Exhibit a solid understanding and experience delivering results based on consumer insights
  • Advanced ability to quickly synthesize inputs and drive towards appropriate solutions
  • Advanced ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks in order to deliver desired outcomes within allotted time frames
  • Proven experience in project ownership and accountability
  • Skilled at leading, planning, coordinating and directing the work of design teams
  • Critical thinker demonstrated by checking thinking for clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, significance, logic, and fairness
  • Ability to reach appropriate/actionable solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to write and prepare documents/reports/correspondence in a concise, logical, grammatically appropriate format

WORKING CONDITIONS

Tools and Equipment Used

- Computer with design specific software, copier, phone, and other typical office equipment

Travel- Minimal – Moderate: 25% - 40% of the time

Physical & Mental Demands

  • Frequently required to sit at a desk/workstation for long period of time
  • Ability to work at a computer terminal for extended periods of time
  • Digital dexterity and hand/eye coordination in operation of office equipment
  • Light lifting and carrying of supplies, files, etc.
  • Ability to speak to and hear employees/clients via phone or in person
  • Body motor skills sufficient to enable incumbent to move around the office environment
  • Ability to analyze unique situations and develop appropriate response
