Network Engineer Role:

The Network Engineer will be responsible for a variety of IP and Telecom Engineering support and perform network related troubleshooting, configuration, and maintenance. The Network Engineer role will be able to manage small projects independently.

Duties:

  • Provide 8 x 5 support of the Telecom and Network infrastructure environment, with 24 x 7 support in an on-call rotation
  • Continuous monitoring of all network equipment via network monitoring system (NMS).
  • Respond to SNMP trap alarm notifications and resolve/repair issue (if necessary)
  • Day to day support on all network related issues (trouble tickets, new circuit turn ups, etc.)
  • 2nd level technical support (i.e. 802.1q, Q-in-Q, P2P) on all Ethernet connectivity (IDF to MDF/MMR, IDF to IDF, Inter-site)
  • 2nd level technical support on all TDM circuits (T1, E1, DS3, OCx, Clocking, etc.)
  • Support grooming of the overall network to improve network reliability and scalability
  • Provide support on general customer related questions
  • Day-to-day technical support on peering issues, route server issues, etc.
  • Provide support on special requests such as rDNS name change, sFlow data, traffic utilization,
  • Assist in deploying and configuring Ethernet and optical switches, MPLS routers, DWDM, and BGP routing, etc.
  • Implement maintenance windows (i.e. software upgrades, hardware failures, migrations, etc.)
  • Maintain inventory database
  • Promote and demonstrate behaviors consistent with CoreSite's culture and core values
  • Special projects as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Must be able to work outside normal business hours, including weekends, late nights, holidays, and on-call support
  • Able to travel to other CoreSite data centers for onsite support and/or maintenance
  • Good knowledge of switched network topologies, MPLS, VPLS, trunking, and port configuration
  • Good knowledge of network tools such as ping, traceroute, ssh, nslookup, etc.
  • Good understanding of the OSI Reference Model
  • Good understanding of digital hierarchy: DS0, DS1, DS3 and SONET networks.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience working with SONET network elements
  • Experience working with DWDM
  • Good understanding of Peering or experience working with Internet Exchange Points
  • Experience working in a data center environment
  • Experience dealing with Tier 1 & 2 carriers, ISPs, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Understanding of copper and fiber cabling
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite with emphasis in Excel and Visio
  • A knack for grace under pressure and a sense of urgency that puts the customer first

Education/Experience:
  • High school diploma, trade school degree preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of networking experience with Brocade/Extreme, Nokia and Cisco OS or equivalent
