Shop Hand (Finance)
Summary/Objective:
Under general or direct supervision, the Shop Hand assists in maintaining shop operations, fleet maintenance, and organization. This role is responsible for cleaning and detailing fleet vehicles, performing general maintenance and inspections, assisting mechanics with minor repairs, managing inventory, and ensuring the shop and yard remain clean and organized. The Shop Hand also assists with documentation, delivers and picks up parts and equipment, and supports a safe and efficient work environment. Strong attention to detail, effective time management, and adaptability to evolving business needs are essential in this role.
Essential Functions:
Clean all fleet vehicles, travel trailers, and equipment. Clean and detail the inside of all vehicle cabs. Fuel, grease, and lubricate a variety of equipment and fleet vehicles as instructed. Apply knowledge of lubricating systems, oils, greases, and attachments in servicing fleet vehicles and equipment.
Perform general maintenance and cleaning of equipment and mechanical tools, applying knowledge of operating principles of gasoline, diesel, and alternative-fueled engines.
May perform inspections, preventive maintenance, and light repairs as assigned, requiring familiarity with the operating principles of light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
Clean the fleet yard and shop areas, maintaining all equipment in an organized manner. Ensure the worksite is orderly, clean, and free from hazards, promoting an environment that supports efficiency, safety, and productivity. Regularly assess and minimize potential safety risks.
Take inventory and conduct daily inspections on all fleet and equipment items to ensure they are in proper working condition and that no damage or theft has occurred during business and non-business hours. Maintain accurate records as part of standard organizational practices.
Assist the Shop Administrative Assistant with vehicle and equipment documents, ensuring new documents are placed in fleet vehicles or upon license plates as necessary.
Put away new inventory, tools, and shop equipment; make sure that all inventory is organized.
Ship back any items that need to be returned or sent to outside vendors. Keep track of all shipments and ensure credits are issued.
Assist Mechanics with any repairs as needed in the shop and on field calls, applying basic knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of equipment.
Pick up and deliver parts and supplies, vehicles, and/or small equipment as needed.
May perform minor welding and fabrication of parts under supervision.
Identify and report significant repair and maintenance issues to the Equipment Shop Manager, staying aware of occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work environment.
Perform yard and equipment shop janitorial duties.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment:
All work is performed either inside a machine shop with open bay doors, or outside in various types of weather (i.e. heat, cold, wind, sun and inclement weather, etc.).
Exposure to all types of automotive solvents.
Exposure to all elements of nature on a regular basis.
Exposure to loud noises.
Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc.
Physical Demands - The physical demands below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
Must have good visual and auditory physical capabilities in order to manage sight and sounds in a hazardous machine shop environment.
Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Coordination between hands, eyes, and feet to guide equipment and objects is required.
Occasionally sit; frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and crouch; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
Must be able to push and pull with hands, arms, and feet repetitively.
Must be able to push, pull, climb, sit, and stretch regularly while performing the essential functions of the job.
Must be able to be alert and cognitive of multiple concurrent activities, including awareness of other employees, subcontractors, machinery, equipment, and moving traffic when applicable.
Must be able to work around loud noises.
Must be able to mount and dismount safely off vehicles and equipment.
Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
Must be able to work overtime as requested.
Must be able to walk on uneven terrain.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 60 pounds.
Travel Required:
Position travels outside the local area but usually within Northern California 10-20% of the time.
Required Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Successful completion of the equivalent to one year of vocational education in the automotive, truck or heavy equipment service field may substitute for the required work experience of 1 to 3 years.
Must be mechanically inclined.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Heavy Equipment Mechanic experience: 1-3 years (2 years Preferred).
Fleet Mechanic experience: 1-3 years (2 years Preferred).
Additional Eligibility Requirements:
Valid driver license.
Clean driving record: 5 years
May be required to drive personal vehicle to multiple worksites during the workday. Proof of current/active automobile insurance if driving personal vehicle and assigned to multiple sites.
Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.
Cellphone for communication and scheduling.
