Honeywell Performance Materials and Technologies have an opening for a Chemical Pilot Plant Operator our Buffalo, NY facility. Honeywell's Buffalo Research Lab has been one of the company's key research and development hubs for more than 60 years. The site has a long history of innovation and has enabled Honeywell to become a world leader in the development of fluorinated molecules, including common household materials such as refrigerants, blowing agents for insulation, and solvents that are better for the environment and make life more comfortable and energy-efficient.

The Buffalo Research Lab employs 160 skilled Honeywell employees, some which are world experts in their fields. It supports the Advance Materials businesses within the company's ESS (Energy and Sustainability Solutions) strategic business group.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and operate chemical processes and plant utilities under the direction of chemical engineer.
  • Work includes movement of bulk quantities of chemicals, start-up, and standard operation of pilot scale equipment, following operating procedures and use of PPE.
  • Perform troubleshooting on large scale equipment.
  • Run analytical samples including GC and wet chemistry.
  • Must be able to read and follow stand operating procedures and record data results in batch records. Operator is expected to follow specific instructions as required. For cGMP processes, operator must be trained and follow all current good manufacturing processes and adhere to the requirements at all times.
  • Requires education and/or experience in chemical plant processes such as: reactions, distillations, filtrations, neutralizations, and handling of highly hazardous materials.
  • Requires education and/or experience in typical chemical plant equipment including piping, valves, pumps, tubing, instruments, high pressure and low vacuum equipment, glass and polymer lined equipment, vacuum systems, and various filtration equipment.
  • Must demonstrate ability to learn and use analytical equipment needed in support of processes including Gas-chromatograph and other laboratory instruments.
  • Strict adherence to established safety policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with HS&E regulations and life critical safety tools such as Lock-Tag-Try, Line Break, and Hot Work permits and procedures.
  • Must be able wear all types of PPE and respiratory equipment as appropriate.
  • Physical requirements: Must be able to move up to 600 pound drums and 250 pound gas cylinders utilizing appropriate handling equipment, lift and carry up to 35 pounds, climb ladders and scaffolding, wear required PPE and respiratory equipment as directed
  • Experience with instrumentation, control system and data acquisition software
  • Roating shift to support 24 hour operations both 5 and 7 days per week.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills with typical chemical process equipment (Pumps, agitators, instrumentation, utilities, etc.)

The annual base salary range for this position is $40.59 per hour equivalent to $84,427.50. Please note that this salary information serves as a general guideline. There is also potential opportunity for overtime. Honeywell considers various factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education and training, key skills, as well as market and business considerations.

As an R&D Hourly Chemical Pilot Plant Operator here at Honeywell, you will support R&D by conducting experiments, collecting data, and maintaining lab equipment, ensuring accurate and efficient tests for new technologies and products. This will be a rotating shift, and you will report directly to our R&D Manager on-site. This is a unionized role, and candidates selected will be expected to be or become members of the union.

  • Experience with instrumentation, control system and data acquisition software while not required would be seen as a good asset.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel) and computer based process control systems is preferred.
  • Knowledge of 5S standardization systems a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate with peers, operating and maintenance staff.
