Reports to: Linecrew Supervisor Job Summary: This position is responsible for construction and maintenance of electric power lines, substations and street lighting. Essential Duties Construct, maintain and repair power lines for street lighting, power and light distribution and other purposes. Install high voltage metering equipment. Install poles, cross arms, streetlights, wires, transformers, and regulators. Participate in established stand by schedule and may be called to assist other when problems develop due to emergency situations. Use ropes, blocks, shovels, wrenches, rulers, pliers, connectors, chain saws, hammers, pike poles, and related tools and equipment associated with Line Worker trade. Make service connections, hang transformers, dig holes for poles and anchors. Operate all necessary equipment in the operation, maintenance and construction in an electrical distribution system; including drills, generators and override switch along with various hand tools. Know the principles and perform bucket and pole top rescue. Install various street lighting fixtures. Provide technical leadership and maintain quality standards with Line Worker Apprentices. Perform all other tasks as assigned. Essential Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Working knowledge of the tools, materials and methods used in line construction and maintenance work. At least three years experience in construction work. Ability and skill in climbing poles and working at moderate heights with wires energized at high voltages. Residency within 20 miles of municipal boundary. Valid Michigan Drivers License with CDL. Effective workplace skills as demonstrated through WorkKeys assessments (Workplace Documents 4, Graphic Literacy 4, Workplace Observation - 3). Certification Preference Successful completion of a multi-year electric line worker apprenticeship program; US Department of Labor recognized preferred. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Ability to lift, pull, push and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to climb vertical ladders and poles. Ability to hear vocal instructions from 45 feet in the air. Ability to visually monitor overhead work. Must be able to extend, twist and pull. Work includes proximity to environmental hazards associated with electrical, mechanical and/or power equipment. Work includes frequent exposure to extreme hot or cold weather conditions.
