Commercial Lines Underwriting Assistant (Administrative)



This position is responsible for the processing and rating activities for automated and manual commercial lines policies for assigned lines of business.  The position also assists in training of other members of the Commercial Lines Processing Team to ensure that quality products and superior service are provided to our agents and insured's. 

As required by specific business needs within identified underwriting office locations, this position may be assigned to exclusively handle an agency, as the duties noted below under Essential Duties and Responsibilities and/or may provide administrative and clerical support to assist in the achievement of Commercial Lines business goals.

The ideal candidate will reside in the Harrisburg or Pittsburgh areas.

  • Assists with training team members and new employees on tasks and processing in new lines of business and/or different types of transactions.

  • Monitors emails and assigned work for proper handling.
  • Accesses and records the statistical information necessary for the development of statistical and actuarial reports.
  • Has a working knowledge of multiple systems and can discern inconsistencies between each.

Quality Orientation

  • Gathers necessary data for assigned transactions, in accordance with the Company's rate, rule and form filings, to ensure an accurate product.
  • Processes automated and manual transactions for assigned lines of business, to include quotes, new business, renewals, endorsements, audits, cancellations (notices and return premium calculations) and related activities such as reviewing policies after audits for possible renewal updates, determining fire rates on-line, interim billings, etc.
  • Gathers required base rates, LCM, and other details from Reference Connect and other sources, sets up and manually rates (does calculations for) transactions not 100% automated within the policy processing systems for assigned lines of business.  Completes manual transactions including forms and Declarations.
  • Enters transaction information into the PC, as applicable, to record it on the system for processing and document production.
  • Assists with Bond tasks, such as new and renewal of POAs, Agency terminations, etc.

Planning and Organizing

  • Initiates and follows-up on correspondence with agents and various other departments on routine matters.
  • Independently organizes and prioritizes workload to meet Company expected timeframes.

Positive Approach

  • Works closely with the CSS to resolve errors and account or agency issues or concerns.
  • Works closely with other Underwriting Assistants, Team Support Technicians and/or Underwriters to resolve errors and account or agency issues or concerns before working with the CSS. 
  • Participates in special projects, as assigned by the Team Leader.

  • Occasionally interacts with personnel from the claims service office and Billing Services; as well as personnel from agents' offices.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Credentials

  • High School Diploma or GED required

Experience

  • Minimum of one (1) years' experience in a clerical support position, preferably in the property/casualty insurance industry
  • Prior commercial lines rating experience, with the ability to rate one or more of the major lines of business, i.e.  Business Auto, Workers' Compensation, Business Owners, Commercial Property, General Liability, and Umbrella, preferred

Technical/Professional Knowledge

JOB REQUIREMENTS (as required by ADA – Americans with Disabilities Act)

  • This position is primarily a sedentary position that requires occasional standing and walking throughout the office environment.
  • Must be able to see and effectively use a computer monitor.
  • Must be able to operate a computer, keyboard and applicable printers and other general office equipment.
  • Must be able to access and enter information accurately using automated systems.
  • Must be able to hear and communicate via the telephone and/or monitoring devices to both internal and external clients.
  • Must be able to present information to individuals and groups.
  • Must be able to interpret and apply concepts that may or may not be based upon established guidelines.
  • Must be able to maintain acceptable attendance and adhere to scheduled work hours.
