Aquatic Scientist Intern (R&D)

What you'll be challenged to do:

The Environmental Department within TranSystems Corporation. is looking for a part-time undergraduate, recent graduate, or graduate-level student to perform environmental specialist related duties in our Raleigh office. The candidate will be responsible for assisting with aquatic surveys, threatened and endangered terrestrial species surveys, wetland and stream assessments, data collection/analysis, and technical report writing.

The work schedule and scope is somewhat flexible, depending on the project needs. Tasks and hours will vary each week.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Assist with fish and freshwater mussel surveys
  • Assist with GIS data analysis, mapping and assessment of environmental features using desktop tools, including Geographic Information System (GIS) data using ESRI ArcGIS software.
  • Read and interpret environmental studies, assessments and other technical reports as needed.
  • The ideal candidate will have the ability to swim and be comfortable in flowing water conditions (i.e. rivers and streams) and have experience with fish and freshwater mussels survey using wading and snorkeling technniques. Other duties will include conducting general natural resource related field assessments and composing reports related to: aquatic species surveys, stream and wetland delineations, noise and air modeling, wildlife identification, endangered species/habitat biological assessments, plant identification/tree surveys, land use studies, socio-economic studies, historical/ archaeological studies, parkland assessments and/or NEPA/SEPA environmental impact assessments.  Experience with Geographic Information System (GIS) data and knowledge and experience with recent ESRI ArcGIS software is recommended.


Qualifications

What you bring to our firm:

  • Bachelor, Graduate Degree or working towards either degree in fisheries and wildlife, natural resources, biological science, plant sciences, environmental science, or other related program.
  • Must have a current valid NC Driver's License
  • Must be able to work outdoors during a variety of weather and environmental conditions.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel
  • Must be detail oriented and possess excellent organizational and technical writing skills
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks as assigned
  • Must communicate well with others and have excellent phone etiquette
  • Must be able to work independently and manage time wisely
  • Actively engages multiple perspectives when solving problems, seeks to learn from peers, and encourages reciprocal learning among team members.

What we'd prefer for you to bring to our firm:

  • SCUBA Certification highly desirable

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • Talk, hear, use hands and fingers to handle or feel, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach
  • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 50 pounds occasionally

 

Working Conditions:

  • Travel and work in field environment 70% of the time.
  • Work in indoor office environment 30% of the time.
  • Overnight travel may be necessary
