Senior Credit Risk Officer (Finance)

Our Senior Credit Risk Officer is a strategic leader responsible for evaluating, managing, and mitigating credit risk across the commercial lending portfolio. This role demands deep expertise in both Commercial Real Estate (CRE) and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) lending, with a strong emphasis on financial modeling, covenant analysis, and mentoring junior staff. The officer will serve as a key decision-maker, working closely with Loan Officers and Underwriters to ensure sound credit practices and portfolio integrity. This individual is not required to source new business opportunities but rather will focus on converting commercial loan opportunities with a balanced approach to portfolio risk management. This individual will join a growing commercial lending team (WY, CO, UT) and $168M commercial portfolio.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth financial analysis and risk assessments for new and existing credit exposures. Strong analytical skills, including proficiency in financial modeling and covenant structuring.
  • Develop and implement strategic risk mitigation frameworks aligned with organizational goals. Collaborate with underwriting teams to ensure well-prepared credit packages and sound decision-making.
  • Lead periodic portfolio reviews and stress testing exercises. Ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Own and manage a diverse lending portfolio, including CRE and middle-market C&I loans.
  • Mentor junior credit staff and support their professional development.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to support business growth while maintaining credit discipline. Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
  • Complies with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control. Serves as the Bank CRA Officer and assures compliance with all of CRA policies and procedures. Maintain a thorough understanding of the applicable laws and court rulings regarding Credit Union matters in general, as well as collection-related matters including, but not limited to, bankruptcy and foreclosure.

Knowledge and Skills

Experience

Minimum of 10–12 years of experience in commercial credit risk, with a blend of CRE and C&I exposure. Excellent communication and leadership abilities. Experience with mentoring and developing junior staff. Familiarity with regulatory frameworks and risk rating systems. Experience with commercial lending software and financial analysis tools.

Education/Certifications/Licenses

Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field; MBA preferred. Certification in Commercial Credit (e.g., NACM, CRC, CCRA) is a plus.

Interpersonal Skills

The ability to motivate or influence internal or external senior level professionals is a critical part of the job, requiring a significant level of influence and trust. Obtaining cooperation and agreement on important outcomes via frequently complex, senior level dialogues, as well as a professional level of written communication skills are essential to the position.

FULL TIME POSITION

Starting Range: $77,904.87 - $87,179.26

Full Range: $74,195.11 - $111,292.66

Physical Requirements

Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of travel by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.

Working Conditions

Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled private office with minimal noise.

Must be able to perform job functions independently and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to plan and direct the work activities of self and others. Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence. Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of customer service and discretion when dealing with the public. Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines / requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and/or fast pace. Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
