A Brief Overview

The Cost Analyst is responsible for managing all day-to-day cost accounting functions in a manufacturing environment. This includes reviewing work orders, analyzing variances between standard and actual costs, and maintaining accurate standard costing for materials and finished goods. The role supports operational and financial decision-making through data analysis and reporting and requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams such as Production and Purchasing. Analytical skills, attention to detail, and experience with ERP systems are critical to success.

What you will do

  • Review shop floor completions and work orders to identify and resolve material and labor hour discrepancies. Collaborate with production to ensure accurate setup and costing.
  • Enter and maintain standard costs for all purchased items. Run cost roll-ups for finished goods and bulk products. Perform quarterly inventory revaluations.
  • Perform month-end variance analysis between actual and standard costs. Investigate purchase price variances, review Lower of Cost or Market reports, and support reporting initiatives.
  • Ensure routings are set up prior to production start. Make daily updates to costing bills based on specification notices. Review cost reports to confirm accuracy of new item setups.
  • Prepare journal entries to adjust work orders and support other financial or accounting duties as needed. Work with Purchasing on PO quantity and currency-related issues.
  • Clear receiving errors related to standard cost issues.
  • Review, allocate, and approve incoming freight bills.
  • Support special projects or ad-hoc cost reporting as assigned.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance cost accuracy and transparency.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of cost accounting processes.
  • Some duties may vary slightly by location.


Education Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Accounting or related field (Required) or
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline (Preferred)


Experience Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment (Required)
  • 1-3 years with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards) (Preferred)
  • 1-3 years prior exposure to plant operations and variance analysis (Preferred)


Skills and Abilities

  • Understanding of manufacturing cost structures, standard costing, and variance analysis. (High proficiency)
  • Commitment to accurate cost maintenance and thorough financial review. (High proficiency)
  • Ability to manage deadlines, prioritize tasks, and work independently. (High proficiency)
  • Proficiency with Excel (v-lookups, pivot tables, formulas) to support cost analysis. (Medium proficiency)
  • Familiarity with ERP systems for work order review, cost entry, and reporting. (Medium proficiency)
  • Ability to communicate clearly across departments (Production, Purchasing, Finance). (Medium proficiency)
  • Capability to analyze cost issues and drive timely resolution. (Medium proficiency)
